Stand up to speed up meetings

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

Weblog OrganizingLA suggests that the key to shorter meetings might be losing the chairs.
Instead of sitting at a traditional conference table, we took the chairs out of the room and ran meetings while standing on our feet. Well, the length of the meetings DRASTICALLY dropped, because people didn’t want to stand for long. Meetings went from 30-60 minutes to roughly 1/2 of that while still delivering meaty content.
So maybe you don’t want to stand up at every meeting you go to, but if your 15- and 30-minute meetings are more often turning into 1- and 2-hour affairs, instituting a few stand-up meetings here and there might be a smart solution. — Adam Pash

Download of the Day: Explorer Breadcrumbs (Windows)

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

Windows only: Donationware program Explorer Breadcrumbs adds a breadcrumb toolbar to XP’s Explorer windows similar to what’s currently available in Vista.
The trail of breadcrumbs toolbar shows the directories you’ve navigated to get to the current folder, giving you an easy way to navigate back to one of the root folders or to another folder altogether through the drop-down next to each folder in the trail. To be perfectly honest, Explorer Breadcrumbs did not work for me – I installed it, but there was no toolbar to be found. However, one trusty reader has been using it forever without problems. So this is a very nifty little utility in theory, and if you’re luckier than I am, in practice. If it works for you, or if you know of a similar tool, let’s hear it in the comments. Ask the Readers: What’s in your wallet?

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

In response to the ubiquitous credit card commercial, Trent from The Simple Dollar weblog discusses what he carries in his wallet.
There’s nothing I’d call groundbreaking inside his wallet, but he does make good points regarding what he carries, what he doesn’t, and why. For example, his only photo ID is a driver’s license (minimizing chances of identity theft), and he only carries one credit card at a time (again, in case of theft).
That’s all well and good, but what I’d really like to hear is what Lifehacker readers are carrying in their wallets. What clever gems of life hacking brilliance have you got tucked away in there? Maybe you’ve just consolidated your club cards? Let’s hear what’s in your wallet in the comments. — Adam Pash

Web site TextMarks lets you create a central place to distribute information to anyone via text message.
It works like this: You set up your own free account at TextMarks based on a unique keyword (for example, I used lifehack). Then you can assign a response for that keyword, from a static text response to a dynamic response from a web page. So, for example, if you were to send a text message to TextMark (41411) with lifehack (the TextMark I created) in the body of the message, TextMark will text you back with the top stories at Lifehacker.
You can edit the TextMark response at any time – whether you’re using a web page or you’re manually entering your message each time. TextMarks could be a great way to get messages out to a large group (Want to know when the next soccer practice is? Set up [...]

Growing a set of horns

Other than this blog growing horns I have been busy doing a few things.
1.) Pruning old posts – This place was starting to get cluttered with old outdated ideas. In the past, deleting posts would throw your rankings into a loop, let’s see how search engines handle it today.
2.) Removal of blogroll – Made a people page for those who take the time to comment that is linked in the sidebar. This actually has more value than a “sitewide” blogroll.
3.) Search Engines – Seeing how search engines deal with the appearance of archives in the sidebar, removal of posts and 301 redirects. Google gets an A+ for dealing with broken code and also for having a place for me to bitch about it.
4.) SEO Phraseology – SEOs create little imaginary worlds to appear like authorities to people who can not think for themselves, sad.
5.) Growing a set of horns – [...]

Create your own Web 2.0 logos

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

Want to create a logo using that hard-to-define but easy-to-recognize Web 2.0 style? Tech blog Hongkiat.com shows you how.
You’ll need Photoshop and a downloadable “style” file provided by the author. This file includes the necessary elements to recreate six popular logos (including LinkedIn and Skype), though the idea here is not to copy, but rather to learn the basic techniques and “start your own creativity from there.”
Although the tutorial suffers from a bit of fractured English, it does show you how to recreate that distinct Web 2.0 style (annoying as it may be). Hmmm…wonder what the Lifehacker logo would look like after being “Web 2.0-ized.” — Rick Broida

Turn old LPs into cool coasters

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

DIY site Curbly shows you how to turn old, unwanted LP records into nifty-looking coasters.
The key bit of equipment you’re going to need is a 4.5-inch hole saw ($20-40 at the local hardware store), which you’ll use to cut away the record’s vinyl–leaving only the colorful, artistic center. (A drill press would be ideal, too, but a handheld can do the job.) From there you’ll just need to sand the edges and apply some spray-on polyurethane.
I know, it seems like sacrilege to treat LPs this way. But, really, if they’re just collecting dust, you might as well give them new life as coffee-table saviors. Of course, before you fire up the drill, why not convert your vinyl to digital audio first? — Rick Broida

Windows Vista only: Tweak your Vista boot configuration with VistaBootPRO, an easy-to-use alternative to the command-line bcdedit.exe utility.
As you may know, Vista supports multi-boot environments, thus enabling you to install, say, three different operating systems on the same box. VistaBootPRO enables you to modify Vista’s Boot Configuration Data (BCD) registry using an attractive, simplified interface. You can back up and export your bootloader configuration, add operating systems to the boot menu, repair Vista’s boot configuration data and more.
This is definitely a worthwhile utility for anyone who likes to monkey with multi-boot configurations. VistaBootPRO requires Vista, natch, but the software itself costs nothing. — Rick Broida

Add a soundtrack to your YouTube videos with AudioSwap

YouTube has rolled out a new feature called AudioSwap that allows users to add a music soundtrack to their videos after they’ve been uploaded to YouTube.
After you publish a video, click on the Replace Audio button on your My Videos page. From there it’s a simple 2-step process of picking the song you like from YouTube’s offerings (no worries about copyright infringement here), previewing it with your video, and publishing away. All of your previous audio will be lost (no huge problem if it’s a computer demonstration or a noisy clip with bad audio to begin with), replaced by the soundtrack. I tried it out with a video I’m publishing later today, and it seemed to work without a hitch. — Adam Pash

Digital Photography School serves up six reasons to get high with your camera. By which they mean, of course, shooting from above your subject. One advantage is the elimination of potentially uninteresting horizons:
Photographing a scene below you eliminates horizons and skies. This means less big empty blue spaces in your shots and hopefully more points of interest.
I’ve used this method a few times when taking snapshots of the kids, and, sure enough, I always end up with more interesting photos. So get up on a chair or ladder and look down on the world. Photographically speaking, of course. Photo by rentoholic 17. — Rick Broida

All you need to do is say, “Thanks!”However, it’s not what you say, it’s when you say it. Don’t reply to David’s message until the time arrives when he promised to work on it.
I use that “will get back to you about this on Wednesday” trick all the time to clear out my inbox; so a “thanks” on Wednesday would be just the nagless nudge to get me off my butt. Any other tips for getting others to get back to you? Post ‘em up in the comments. — Gina Trapani

Ning relaunches instant web community tool

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

The webapp that lets you create your own social network – Ning – has relaunched with new features that make starting and customizing your new community a snap.
Wendy posted about Ning before but I only got my hands dirty with Ning 2.0 today, and it’s dang impressive. In under 2 minutes I had a dynamic, user-based web site with registration, member profiles, a forum, video and photo sharing, and a blog, with a custom template. For a sports team, small group, or even Aunt Martha who wants to get her recipe community off the ground but doesn’t know where to start, Ning’s it.
And something else piqued my interest in Ning.
Over at TechCrunch’s Ning post, I was super-impressed with CEO Gina Bianchini and Ning investor Marc Andreessen’s hustle in the user comments, replying to everyone’s question and criticism about Ning 2.0 almost real-time. Now, getting to know a [...]

Ambient Clock displays what events are coming up

Posted by: st3ch on: March 2, 2007

The Ambient Clock Google Gadget ties into your Google Calendar and displays events coming up as well as how much time it will take to get there.
Enter an event and location (like Lunch at Nati’s at 12PM) and the Ambient Clock gadget will block out the lunch meeting on the clock, calculate the driving distance to Nati’s based on Google Maps and represent that time on the clock, and change color as the event gets nearer (yellow 10 minutes to the event, blue when no pending events are coming right up.) This isn’t yet-another-clock widget, folks. If the virtual clock’s a hit, they may manufacture real ones. — Gina Trapani

Slim down your wallet with Just One Club Card

Posted by: st3ch on: March 1, 2007

Web site Just One Club Card lets you condense up to 8 different discount club cards onto one front-and-back card, meaning your back-breaking wallet is about to go on a big diet.
Just enter the barcode numbers and choose the store for each card you want to get rid of and Just One Club Card will convert them to a printable, one-card format. Fold, laminate, and enjoy. I currently count about 100 stores in the drop-down, but if a store you need is missing, you can contact the site and ask for its inclusion or try your luck with the advanced page. We posted about a similar tool a year ago, but it appears to be dead, and Just One Club Card’s tool seems better developed anyway. If you’re not keen on getting rid of your cards, you might still consider a better method of organization. Thanks [...]

Download of the Day: Linkification (Firefox)

Posted by: st3ch on: March 1, 2007

Windows/Mac/Unix (Firefox): The Linkification Firefox extension converts text URLs into clickable links.
When we posted about opening unlinked text URLs via drag-and-drop, a couple of reader suggested Linkification, and they were certainly right to do so. The Linkification extension turns any unlinked text URLs into clickable links so you don’t even have to know there was ever a time when the link wasn’t clickable. Add to that a robust set of preferences and this is a great little extension. Linkification is free, works wherever Firefox does. For opening wrapped links, don’t forget about AutoCopy. — Adam Pash

Pick a color palette with ColorJack Sphere

Posted by: st3ch on: March 1, 2007

Previous mentioned design web site ColorJack has rolled out a new sphere tool that makes choosing a color palette of complimentary colors easy (and kind of fun).
Just select the kind of palette you’re looking for, then start moving the cursor around until you find a scheme you like. I know we’re not all designers, but you don’t have to be a designer to find a tool like this useful. In fact, all the better that you use something like ColorJack if design isn’t your forté, since it gives an even more helpful hand to the color deficient like myself. Once you find a scheme you like, you can export the palette to Photoshop, Illustrator, or just permalink the page. Handy. — Adam Pash

Save hundreds on your next big electronics purchase

Posted by: st3ch on: March 1, 2007

Web site StoryEvent posts an interesting method for getting large discounts on consumer electronics at chain electronics stores.
It boils down to being a good negotiator, though the tactics seem somewhat shady (but I’m a total wimp in the negotiation room, so you may feel otherwise). You indicate that you’re interested in buying a big fat warranty, then ask ask the sales assistant to lower the item’s price. Since big box electronics stores are often pushed to sell warranties, they’ll be willing to budge on the price of your item – especial if it’s got a big price tag. Then when checkout time comes, you have a change of heart on the warranty. Simple enough.
If the digg comments are any indication, this method (or similar methods) works for a lot of people. Either way, I’d love to hear our readers’ methods for lowering the cost of [...]

Domain Names and Defensible Traffic

Posted by: st3ch on: March 1, 2007

Domain names may play a big roll not only in anchor text, but also in overall domain credibility, linkability, and defensibility. -Aaron Wall

I am not sure what the word defensible traffic actually means because I can not define it, but I do see that it was created by this guy and linked to by these guys.
As for domain names playing a big roll in anchor text I agree. (people tend to use the domain name unless you can promote the website “title” well)
As for domain names playing a part in credibility I agree.
As for domain names playing a roll in linkability I agree.
As for domain names being favored in algorithms I do not agree, look at the domain name used in my internet marketing guide that currently ranks #5 in Google with few incoming links and little content. I know, not a screaming example but it is true, search engines [...]

Control Last.fm from your Mac keyboard

Posted by: st3ch on: March 1, 2007

The 6V8 weblog loves Last.fm, Macs, and keyboard shortcuts – and so decided it would be nice to control the Last.fm player via the keyboard without switching applications.
The method involves installing a freeware application from Griffin called Proxi, which is designed to give you more control over a lot of Griffin peripherals as well as Mac applications. In this case, the author details how to set up Proxi to control your Last.fm player from either the keyboard or using a Griffin AirClick remote. The instructions could be clearer, but with a little effort it’s doable. Last.fm lovers should definitely give this a try. — Adam Pash
